CLEEVE PARK is a lovely wooded location, quiet, yet not isolated, and less than half a mile from BLUE ANCHOR's sandy beach (in the "Higher" water quality category). Stroll down the lane to the sea front where there is crazy golf, a fun pool and fishing competitions at high tide. Free parking. WEST SOMERSET STEAM RAILWAY (1 mile) has a programme of events throughout the year. Fabulous sunsets across the bay.
Cooking need only be an option as there is a choice of eating places within walking distance. Sunday lunchtime carvery at the Smugglers is popular with locals. A vegetarian option is available. Evening menus are imaginative and reasonably priced. The bouncy castle keeps children happy while mum and dad enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the garden. Driftwood Cafe has a good choice of fish and more traditional food which can be eaten inside or in their garden overlooking Blue Anchor bay, while Binham Grange is the place for afternoon tea or a special meal. Pub grub is served at the Blue Anchor.
The old port of WATCHET now boasts a smart marina but the quay area has changed little since Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote The Ancient Mariner after a visit from his nearby Nether Stowey home ( open to visitors) A Town Cryer announces special events during the Summer. There is a small but interesting museum. Sea fishing trips can be booked or take a walk along the old Mineral Line. There are supermarkets here and in nearby WILLITON.
The cobbled street in medieval DUNSTER, (4 miles) is lined with craft shops and art galleries, This is the place for a cream tea! The castle (National Trust) has attractions all the year round. A stroll through the town leads to the Water Mill and Gallox Bridge - the start of some good walks.
The bustling town of MINEHEAD is the terminus of the steam railway or experience the open top bus to Porlock. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, banks, theatre, cinema,etc. Behind the sandy beach and harbour North Hill is the start of the Coastal Walk. Outdoor concerts are held in Blenheim Gardens; folk music evenings at the Ship Aground by the harbour.
